DC Overvoltage Alarm

Why a DC overvoltage alarm occurs and the recommended PV string voltage ranges for single-phase and three-phase string inverters.

Possible cause

Too many PV modules are connected in series, causing the voltage to exceed the inverter's upper voltage limit.

Solution

Because of the temperature characteristics of PV modules, the lower the temperature, the higher the voltage. The input voltage range of a single-phase string inverter is 100–500 V, and the recommended voltage after stringing is between 350 V and 400 V. The input voltage range of a three-phase string inverter is 300–1000 V, and the recommended voltage after stringing is between 600 V and 650 V. Within this voltage range the inverter runs at high efficiency and can still generate power when irradiance is low in the early morning and evening, yet the voltage does not exceed the inverter's upper limit and trigger an alarm and shutdown.
