Wiring Errors, Missing Ground Wire & Improper Lightning Protection

Reversed DC/AC terminals, poor terminal contact, a missing ground wire, and inadequate lightning protection — the common causes and how to fix them.

Possible causes and solutions:

  1. The DC PV input terminals are connected in reverse.
  2. The AC live and neutral wires are connected in reverse.
  3. Poor contact at the wiring terminals. This can cause the local temperature of the terminal to rise too high, and may even start a fire.
  4. The ground wire is not connected. The system will work normally under normal conditions, but the inverter will not be protected when a ground fault occurs or a current surge appears. The inverter has surge-protection devices on both its input and output sides; the surge current must flow to earth through the ground wire in order to keep the inverter safe.
  5. The system has no lightning protection. Lightning rods, lightning-protection belts, and other first-level lightning-protection facilities should be installed above the PV modules and the mounting brackets.

Safety warning

A poor terminal connection can overheat and even catch fire, and without a properly connected ground wire the inverter is left unprotected during ground faults or surges. If you are unsure about the wiring, grounding, or lightning protection, contact us.
